Abstract
CHAPTER 1 OF PART 1 DEALS WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FEDERAL CONSTITUTION AND THE HISTORY OF THE BILL OF RIGHT THE REMAINING CHAPTERS IN PARTS 1 DISCUSS IN DEPTH THE SUBSTANTIVE CONTENT OF THE FIRST EIGHT AMENDMENTS AND CORRESPONDING STATE PROVISIONS WITH EMPHASIS ON RECENT COURT INTERPRETATIONS AND TRENDS. THE TOPICS COVERED INCLUDED THE FREEDOMS OF SPEECH, PRESS, AND ASSEMBLY; AND EAVESDROPPING; INTERROGATION AND CONFESSION; SELF-INCRIMINATION AND RELATED ISSUES; ASSISTANCE OF COUNSEL; DOUBLE JEOPARDY; THE FAIR TRIAL RIGHT AND HUMANE PUNISHMENT; AND CIVIL RIGHTS AND RELATED LEGISLATION. IN PART 2 OF THE BOOK LEADING DECISIONS HANDED DOWN BY THE SUPREME COURT ARE EXAMINED IN ORDER TO GIVE THE READER AN UNDERSTANDING NOT ONLY OF WHAT THE LAW SAYS BUT OF THE PROCESSES USED BY THE COURT IN REACHING ITS CONCLUSIONS. THE CASES ARE INCLUDED IN PART 2 RATHER THAN IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE RELATED DISCUSSIONS BECAUSE MANY OF THEM HAVE BROADER APPLICATION THAN THE SUBJECT OF ANY ONE CHAPTER. THE TEXT OF THE U. S.
