Abstract
MAJOR SUBJECTS PRESENTED IN THE WORK INCLUDE THE FEDERAL COURTS, THE BILL OF RIGHTS, THE CRIMINAL PROCESS, DUE PROCESS, AND EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAWS. WITHIN THESE BROAD TOPICS, THE DECISIONMAKING PROCESS, THE CONSTITUTION, AND LIMITATIONS ON SUPREME COURT REVIEW ARE DISCUSSED. EACH MAJOR SUBJECT SECTION INCLUDES INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL, THE TEXTS OF SUPREME COURT DECISIONS WHICH ILLUSTRATE THESE PRINCIPLES AND ISSUES ARE PROVIDED. EACH CASE BEGINS WITH A BRIEF PRESENTATION OF THE FACTUAL CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE CASE. COMMENTARY FOLLOWS EACH SET OF CASES, RAISING QUESTIONS WHICH TEST THE READER'S COMPREHENSION OF THE ISSUES INVOLVED. THIS FORMAT IS FOLLOWED THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. THE SECOND MAJOR CATEGORY OF SUBJECTS FOCUSES ON CONSTITUTIONAL SAFEGUARDS AFFORDED THE ACCUSED; I.E., FOURTH, FIFTH, AND SIXTH AMENDMENT ISSUES. SEARCH AND SEIZURE, THE EXCLUSIONARY RULE, SELF-INCRIMINATION, THE RIGHT TO COUNSEL, THE RIGHT TO A SPEEDY TRIAL, AND DEFENSE WITNESSES ARE DISCUSSED.
