IT OPENS WITH A BASIC INTRODUCTION TO THE LEGAL SYSTEM, THROUGH WHICH THE INDIVIDUAL CASES AND THEIR EFFECTS CAN BE MEASURED. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A MAJOR DISCUSSION OF THE SUBSTANTIVE LAW ON THE USE OF FORCE, VISITATION AND ASSOCIATION RIGHTS, REGULATION OF MAIL, ISOLATED CONFINEMENT, RELIGION, LEGAL SERVICES, DISCIPLINE, PAROLE, TREATMENT, MEDICAL AID, AND RIGHT TO LIFE AS REPRESENTED BY THE JUNE 30, 1976, SUPREME COURT DEATH PENALTY CASES. ALSO INCLUDED IS LITIGATION CONCERNING SUCH PROBLEMS AS CLASSIFICATION, TRANSFER, SEARCH AND SEIZURE, CONDITIONS OF CONFINEMENT, AND CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL. THE REMEDIES AVAILABLE TO A SUCCESSFUL PLAINTIFF AND THE LIABILITIES TO WHICH AN UNSUCCESSFUL DEFENDANT MAY BE SUBJECTED ARE OUTLINED. THE SECOND MAJOR SECTION OF THE VOLUME CONTAINS LEADING FEDERAL AND STATE COURT DECISIONS.
