Data from a 1993 survey were used to examine the content of States' AIDS education programs for inmates and to compare and contrast the content of these programs with published recommendations.
Abstract
Effective AIDS educational programs must be tailored to the audience, must emphasize risk behaviors in discussing the prevention of HIV acquisition and transmission, and should contain an evaluation component and be easily modifiable. Programs for inmates should contain the additional features of recognizing risk behaviors that may occur within the facility, recognizing that many inmates engage in high-risk behaviors outside of prison, and presenting racially, culturally, and gender sensitive messages. This study presents the results of a thematic content analysis of descriptions of 27 State AIDS education programs for inmates. Six broad analytic categories were developed: substantive content, presentation model, nature of sources, risk reduction, cultural and linguistic sensitivity, and additional information. This assessment is presented at two levels, the first an examination of how well the programs match up with National Commission on AIDS (NCOA) recommendations and the second involving more specific discussion about areas of particular concern, i.e., high-risk behavior and change, sexual transmission, transmission through intravenous drug use, and issues related to women inmates. 9 tables, 2 notes, 45 references, and 1 appendix
