Confusion, conspiracy, and dishonest personnel all contribute to cargo theft; adequate physical entry-exit controls and internal security procedures will deter such theft. The text treats almost every aspect of security as it relates to the protection of passengers and to the many problems associated with the movement, storage, and distribution of goods and material.
Abstract
Chapters review transportation and terminal security, warehouse and distribution loss prevention, inventory shortages and facility inspections, transportation and warehouse arson, loss prevention techniques, and insurance coverage. The text discusses such important aspects of physical security as security surveys, physical security standards, protective barriers, lighting, lock and key systems, and transportation locks. Several chapters describe the use of cargo seals; the basics of intrusion-detection systems, alarm systems, and closed-circuit television security; and the security guard force. Eight chapters treat various aspects of maritime, airport, and railroad security. In addition, attention is directed to special areas of transportation security: transportation of valuables, crude oil and product theft, mass transit security, and subway security in London, Paris, Munich, and New York. One chapter looks at the U.S. Custom Service's role in cargo security, while another section focuses on specific loss prevention measures -- risk analysis, fire prevention and safety, personnel selection and management, and disaster management planning. The final section discusses security management principles. Figures, checklists, photographs, about 80 references, and an index are provided. Cargo security standards are appended.
