Studies conducted during the past 20 years on the relationship between environmental factors and convenience store robbery are reviewed, with emphasis on the changes in prevention strategies that have resulted from these studies.
Abstract
The studies have demonstrated a linkage between convenience store robbery and environmental influences. Robbery prevention strategies resulting from these studies have included having two or more clerks on duty, using proper cash-handling practices, eliminating concealed access, and enhancing of visibility. Good cash handling includes limiting the amount of cash available, posting signs indicating limited cash, using time release or drop safes, and training employees to adhere to strict cash-control policies. Eliminating concealed access or escape includes enhanced lighting at the rear and sides of the store, erection of fencing and walls to prevent or slow the escape of robbers, and removal of sight obstacles that robbers might use for concealment. Security devices include robbery alarms, camera or video systems, controlled access safes, mirrors, and other prevention devices. Debate about the economic costs of some approaches should not obscure the reality that changing environmental factors can reduce the incidence of convenience store robberies. Further research should be conducted to determine which prevention techniques should be mandated for all convenience stores and which techniques should be site specific.
