A sample of 34 convenience stores operating in Tallahassee (Fla.), was examined to test the hypothesis that crime and criminal behavior results from a combination of offender characteristics and environmental factors. Potential crime sites should be analyzed to determine which physical characteristics can be altered to prevent future crimes.
Abstract
Previous research concluded that convenience store robberies are responsive to both internal and external physical and geographical features which involve store design and design of the external environment. Among the significant variables identified were location of cashier, number of mirrors, blind corners, number of clerks, unobstructed windows, location of store on a major street, exterior lighting, presence of gas pumps, single family dwellings in vicinity, and vehicular traffic. 5 tables, 1 appendix, and 13 references
