THIS REPORT PROVIDES BASIC INFORMATION ON THE OPERATIONS AND PROCEDURES OF THE CRIMINAL COURT, AND PRESENTS SUGGESTIONS FOR REFORM AND PROPOSED CRIMINAL COURT IMPROVEMENTS.
Abstract
STEPS IN THE CRIMINAL PROCEDURE FOR FELONY AND MISDEMEANOR CASES ARE OUTLINED IN THE FIRST CHAPTER. THE OPERATIONS OF THE CIRCUIT COURT AND THE GRAND JURY ARE THEN DESCRIBED. THE PLEA BARGAINING PRACTICE IS EXAMINED, AND ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST PLEA BARGAINING ARE REVIEWED. OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE THE DUTIES AND OPERATIONS OF THE STATE'S ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, THE PUBLIC OFFENDER, AND THE VARIOUS FORMS OF DIVERSION. A GLOSSARY OF COURT TERMS IS INCLUDED.
