Abstract
Developed to provide general information about violent crime, victimization, the criminal justice system, reporting issues, medical and safety concerns, as well as information on healing and recovering in the aftermath of a crime or a devastating loss due to a crime, this booklet can serve as a quick reference tool and helpful resource and guide to the criminal justice system. The guide book is divided into 11 sections: (1) important things to understand and different types of violent crime; (2) crime victims and survivors with special consideration, such as teen victims, elderly victims, victims of hate crime, victims with disabilities, and victims of drug or alcohol-related crimes; (3) immediate concerns after the crime; (4) the recentness of the crime; (5) reporting what happened; (6) getting help and further assistance; (7) when going to court, understanding the criminal justice process; (8) ongoing aspects of the criminal justice system; (9) after the crime: new or continuing reactions and changes to one’s self and helping friends and family to better understand; (10) where to find more help, information, and support; and (11) definition of common terms in the criminal justice system.
