This recovery workbook was written to help drug-dependent individuals better understand and cope with their feelings and emotions, and the workbook recognizes that recovery from drug dependence requires scrutinizing many facets of life.
Abstract
The first two sections of the workbook focus on the importance of recognizing feelings and on an eight-step process that can be used to cope with feelings. The next six sections concern understanding and coping with such specific feelings as anger, anxiety and worry, boredom, depression, emptiness, joylessness, guilt, and shame. The last two sections deal with the importance of expressing love and other positive feelings. Suggestions on how to use the workbook and maximize its effectiveness are offered. In particular, individuals using the workbook are advised to discuss completed activities with a therapist, counselor, sponsor, or another person in recovery. Individuals are also urged to set recovery goals, develop an action plan, and take specific steps to reach goals. Appendixes include a Coping With Feelings Worksheet and a list of suggested readings.
