DISCUSSION OF THE PROBLEMS OF AN OFFICER AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF LAW AND ORDER IN THE FACE OF THE SOCIAL AND RACIAL RESENTMENTS OF RECENT YEARS.
Abstract
ALTHOUGH ACCEPTED AT FIRST AS AN EASIER OPTION THAN DETENTION, PROBATION GRADUALLY COMES TO BE RESENTED AS A RESTRICTION OF FREEDOM. EVEN MORE, THE PROBATIONER MAY RESENT THERAPY WHICH NECESSITATES A CHANGE IN HIS LIFE PATTERN. HIS CRIME MAY HAVE BEEN A STATEMENT OF PROTEST AT THE SOCIAL SYSTEM, AND HE MAY RESENT ATTEMPTS TO RESOCIALIZE HIM INTO A SYSTEM OF WHICH HE DISAPPROVES. FURTHERMORE, THE PROBATION OFFICER HIMSELF MAY HAVE GRAVE DOUBTS OF HIS OWN ABOUT THE VALIDITY OF THE SOCIAL SYSTEM HE SERVES, AND HIS PROBLEMS MAY BE COMPLICATED BY HIS OWN ETHNIC ORIGIN.
