This is a revised draft of Great Britain's Core (non-IND) Home Office Associate Race Equality Scheme, which specifies the Home Office's duties, key challenges, objectives, and implementation activities under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.
Abstract
The Home Office's general duty under the act is to eliminate unlawful racial discrimination and to promote racial equality and positive race relations. Specific duties are to assess the Home Office's functions and policies for their effect on racial equality, publish the results of these activities, train staff in these duties, and monitor employment policies and practices to ensure they are not racially biased. All directors in the Core Home Office were asked to identify the key challenges, objectives, and targets for achieving racial equality in their operations. Among the challenges mentioned are to ensure that services meet the diverse needs of the whole community without discrimination, and to encourage citizens and their community organizations to address social problems and practice equal opportunity and respect for all people. The proposed scheme is designed to ensure that each new Home Office policy is subjected to a racial equality impact assessment. Further, policies and services are monitored for their impact on racial equality and race relations in the course of their implementation.
