INTENDED AS A TEXT FOR IN-SERVICE AND COLLEGE-LEVEL INSTRUCTION, THIS DOCUMENT PRESENTS 38 ARTICLES DEALING WITH THE HISTORY, TECHNIQUES, AND PROGRAMS OF CORRECTIONAL CLASSIFICATION AND TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS.
Abstract
THIS READER ON CONTEMPORARY CORRECTIONAL CLASSIFICATION AND TREATMENT HAS BEEN COMPILED BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE ON CLASSIFICATION AND TREATMENT OF THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION. THE ARTICLES PRESENTED IN THIS TEXT DEAL WITH EACH OF THE IMPORTANT PHASES OF THE SUBJECT: THE HISTORY OF CLASSIFICATION AND TREATMENT, ORGANIZATIONAL APPROACHES, DIAGNOSTIC PROCESSES, TREATMENT PROCEDURE, PRE-RELEASE PROGRAMS, AND SPECIAL PROBLEMS. THE MATERIALS WERE LIMITED TO INCLUDE THOSE RELATING PRIMARILY TO SPECIALIZED INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAMS FOR DELINQUENTS AND ADULT CRIMINALS. AMONG THE SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREAS COVERED IN THIS READER ARE THE HISTORY OF CLASSIFICATION ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERNS FROM 1870 TO 1970; THE USE OF RECEPTION AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTERS; THE USE OF RECEPTION AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTERS; THE USE OF THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY; TREATMENT-OFFENDER MATCHING; AND THE KINDS OF DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES USED IN CORRECTIONS TODAY. TREATMENT METHODS SUCH AS INMATE ORIENTATION PROGRAMS, GENERAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION, GROUP COUNSELING, PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPY, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION ARE EXAMINED. PRE-RELEASE PROGRAMS FOR INMATES ARE EXPLORED AS WELL. THE SPECIAL PROBLEMS IN CLASSIFICATION AND TREATMENT DISCUSSED IN THIS ANTHOLOGY INCLUDE METHODS OF HANDLING THE SEVERELY RECALCITRANT INMATE, TREATMENT OF THE SEXUAL DEVIANT, PROBLEMS IN DEALING WITH HOMOSEXUALS IN PRISON, AND DESCIPLINE PROBLEMS.
