Abstract
THE PROPOSED MODEL HAS FIVE COMPONENTS: PROGRAM OBJECTIVES; PROGRAM SPONSORSHIP; PRERELEASE SERVICES; POSTRELEASE SERVICES; AND SUPPORT SERVICES. THE RATIONALE OBJECTIVES, AND PROCEDURES FOR EACH COMPONENT ARE PRESENTED. THE MODEL ENVISIONS THE CONTRACTING OF QUALIFIED COMMUNITY-BASED TREATMENT AGENCIES TO SPONSOR THE CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM AND OFFERS GUIDELINES FOR COORDINATING, IMPLEMENTING, AND EVALUATING THE PROGRAM. THE PRERELEASE COMPONENT OF THE MODEL SUGGESTS STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING THE PROGRAM'S RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND FOR RECRUITING, GROUPING, AND ASSESSING INMATES. THE PRERELEASE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO REFLECT INMATES' INTERESTS WHILE HELPING THEM REMEDY ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL DEFICIENCIES AND BUILD JOB SKILLS. THE POSTRELEASE PROGRAM ENCOMPASSES PROCEDURES FOR COUNSELING, PLACEMENT AND FOLLOWUP SERVICES DESIGNED TO HELP CLIENTS PUT TO USE WHAT THEY LEARN IN THE PRERELEASE PROGRAM. THE SUPPORTIVE SERVICES COMPONENT PROVIDES GUIDELINES FOR STAFF RECRUITMENT, SELECTION, AND TRAINING, AND FOR ESTABLISHING RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT, RESEARCH, EVALUATION, AND PLANNING UNITS. DETAILS OF THE PROPOSED EVALUATION DESIGN, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND CURRICULUM OUTLINES ARE INCLUDED. A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF RELATED SURVEYS OF CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS AND INMATES IS APPENDED.
