The California Department of Corrections is legislatively authorized to provide opportunities for inmate self-improvement through an array of education programs.
Abstract
The department must maintain a multi-year correctional education master plan to provide direction for future educational programming. The plan's focus must be on administration, policy, program development, and program integration. Programs involve academic education, vocational education, libraries, and special programs. Program initiatives include apprenticeship, TIE (training, industries, and education), a personal responsibility curriculum, the correctional education master plan, and the Literacy Act of 1989. The goal of TIE is to integrate academic and vocational education programs with work programs to increase inmate productivity and employability. Data on correctional education funding are provided along with a description of facilities involved in inmate education in California.
