In 1990, 18,671 incarcerations were reported to the North Dakota Jail Information System (NDJIS), representing an increase of 6.6 percent over the 1989 total.
Abstract
Of this total, 96 percent were adults and 85 percent were males. Average daily population figures are tabulated for the 33 correctional facilities in the State. The number of incarcerations rose steadily between 1978 and 1982, when the largest number of incarcerations was recorded. Incarceration rates fell between 1983 and 1985 and between 1987 and 1989; compared to 1982, 1990 recorded 24 percent fewer incarceration for check offenders, 36 percent fewer for DUI, and 59 percent fewer for detoxification. The report presents statistics on index crime, arrests, and incarceration, as well as characteristics of offenders including age, gender, race/ethnicity, physical condition at intake, and reason for incarceration. Other tables tabulate figures on inmates' legal status, length of incarceration, and means of release. 27 tables and 3 figures
