ANTHOLOGY OF READINGS DEALING WITH THE HISTORICAL, TRADITIONAL, OPERATIONAL AND LEGAL ASPECTS OF CORRECTIONAL AND PENAL INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
PAPERS IN THE INITIAL CHAPTERS REVIEW THE HISTORY AND CURRENT STATUS OF CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, PENAL LEGISLATION, AND TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY. SECTION 2, 'THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AS A COMMUNITY', PRESENTS SELECTIONS ON THE PRISON EXPERIENCE, WOMEN IN PRISON, PRISON HOMOSEXUALITY, AND INMATE ORGANIZATIONS. THE TEXT ALSO DISCUSSES SPECIFIC PROGRAMS IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. THESE INCLUDE EDUCATIONAL, COUNSELING, AND INMATE SELF GOVERNING EFFORTS. ON THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM, AUTHORS FOCUS ON ALTERNATIVES TO INSTITUTIONALIZATION AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. ADDITIONAL MATERIAL DEALS WITH IMPEDIMENTS TO PENAL REFORM AND THE ETHICAL AND LEGAL ISSUES RAISED BY EXPERIMENTATION WITH OFFENDERS. THIS TEXT SHOULD BE OF INTEREST NOT ONLY TO CRIMINOLOGY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT STUDENTS, BUT CORRECTIONAL PRACTICIONERS AND ADMINISTRATORS AS WELL. (SNI ABSTRACT)
