Abstract
An introductory section on the Japanese correctional administration provides an overview of the criminal justice system which is comprised of a centralized system governing treatment for adult and juvenile offenders and describes the components of the system including the Correction Bureau, Regional Correctional Headquarters, and Training Institute for Correctional Personnel. Penal institutions in Japan include detention houses, prisons, and juvenile prisons. The monograph discusses each in terms of security, grievance mechanisms, treatment systems, prison industries, correctional education, and provision of basic inmate needs. Specialized institutions that are examined in the monograph include juvenile training schools, juvenile classification homes, and women's guidance homes. Chapter references
