Correctional leadership in the 21st century will be very different than leadership in the past, and correctional leadership in the new millennium will require more sophistication and intellect in dealing with issues.
Abstract
Challenges of the future are based on rapid change and fewer guiding policies for addressing many issues. There will also be fewer substantive experts who have experience with specific problems because, due to rapid change, many problems will be new or have a new twist to them. The type of leadership required for the future is referred to as "transformational" leadership. In contrast to transactional leadership, transformational leadership motivates people by inspiring them to focus on broader missions and higher-level goals. Transformational leaders begin with a vision that has a set of values and principles as guidelines to use in responding to issues. Leadership and empowerment are discussed in terms of creating a vision and setting a direction for correctional organizations, facilitating an empowering environment, identifying areas of challenges for the future, and building or reinforcing the culture and character of correctional organizations. Management issues associated with leadership and empowerment are also addressed. 16 endnotes
