Presents data on the growing number of persons in the United States under some form of correctional supervision in 1988, by correctional status, sex, and race. Data are drawn from BJS's annual surveys and periodic censuses on the four correctional populations, including prisoners, jail inmates, probationers, and parolees. Data include counts of each correctional population by select characteristics and jurisdiction. Data also include counts of locally operated jails by select characteristics and jurisdiction.
