A research and demonstration project was designed to evaluate existing vocational education programs offered at the Oregon State Correctional Institution and to provide residents with career preparation services.
Abstract
Career preparation services offered through the demonstration component of the service included ability assessment, employment or orientation, job sampling, career awareness counseling, and instruction. The project's anticipated outcome was a vocational education program which clearly demonstrates the capability of community-based training facilities (in this case, Chemeketa Community College) to provide on-line training in a correctional setting. Differing effects of degree-oriented and nondegree oriented instruction on residents' attitudes or career choices were measured using interviews with correctional facility and community college staff, and students, observations, case studies, instructor and student self-ratings, and analyses of resident students' projects and other output. The project's developmental goals were met. Students enrolled in courses for academic credit achieved at higher levels than those which were not in the areas of academic success, career awareness, and skill development. Appendixes include interviewer guides, copies of forms, correspondence, and brief course descriptions. Tabular data and an evaluation matrix are provided. (ERIC abstract modified)
