A multisource assessment approach was used to evaluate the impact of supervisor attributes on offender work motivation, incorporating data collected from 35 work supervisors, 143 offenders, and seven work supervisor managers from seven Canadian correctional facilities.
Abstract
The surveys focused on supervisor leadership style, organizational outcome measures, and credibility. Compared to supervisors who were rated as having a passive, nonleadership attitude, supervisors who displayed transformational leadership attributes exerted a positive influence upon inmates in terms of their work motivation and job involvement. Similarly, supervisors who were perceived as credible seemed to elicit higher work motivation, job involvement, and extra effort from offenders working under them. According to supervisor manager ratings, supervisor effectiveness was correlated with behavioral measures of offender work motivation. 1 figure and 8 notes
