This text explores the delicate balance that corrections must maintain between the rights of society and the rights of offenders and includes study tools to help students understand and retain what they read.
Abstract
The first section of the text offers a theoretical and historical overview of corrections, describing how society has viewed crime through the ages and how punishments have varied. In the second section of the text, the authors explore numerous traditional and alternative sentencing options ranging from probation, fines, forfeiture, community service, and incarceration to the death penalty. The third section of the text examines the human factor, focusing on characteristics and unique cultures of male, female, juvenile, and special needs of offenders (elderly, disabled, mentally ill, HIV-infected, and high-profile offenders). Two detailed chapters in this section deal with correctional personnel and management styles, techniques and functions. The fourth and final section of the text looks at special challenges such as gangs, riots, drugs, overcrowding, prisoner rights, legal issues, and the future of corrections. Appendixes contain information on jobs in corrections and the American Correctional Association Code of Ethics. References, tables, and figures
