These 11 papers present recent research findings and examine policy and management issues facing corrections administrators and policymakers in the 1990's.
Abstract
An introductory essay discusses the role of political influences in corrections policies and notes that the problems of correctional institutions reflect many of those in American society. Other papers focus on problems that jail administrators must address in an era of reduced funding, the practical and ethical issues of privatization in corrections, issues related to AIDS in correctional institutions, and inmate gangs. Additional papers examine programs for female inmates, work attitudes of correctional personnel, the development and results of shock incarceration, and the impact of large probation caseloads on probation officers. The final papers discuss the nature, effectiveness and costs of intermediate sanctions, including intensive supervision, house arrest, electronic monitoring, and residential centers.
