A BALANCED, RELATIVELY NONTECHNICAL SET OF READINGS ON THE PROBLEMS, PROGRAMS, AND PROSPECTS OF THE FIELD OF CORRECTIONS IS PRESENTED FOR THE BEGINNING STUDENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE 24 SELECTIONS ARE DIVIDED INTO 4 MAJOR SUBJECT CATEGORIES. WITHIN THE FIRST CATEGORY, READINGS ADDRESS RESPONSES TO THE ATTICA SITUATION AND MOTIVATING PROBLEMS; THE PATHOLOGY OF IMPRISONMENT; AND THE ISSUE OF PRISON REFORM; WITH ATTENTION TO EDUCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS, THE EFFECTS OF INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP COUNSELING, AND TECHNIQUES IMPLEMENTED FOR TRANSFORMING THE INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENT TO A SETTING MORE CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING. THE SECOND CATEGORY CONSIDERS THE PAINS OF IMPRISONMENT, THE INMATE SUBCULTURE, SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN THE PHILADELPHIA PRISON SYSTEM, THE SOCIAL MEANING OF PRISON HOMOSEXUALITY, PRISON RIOTS, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND THE POLITICALIZATION OF PRISONERS. THESE SELECTIONS ILLUSTRATE PRISONER FEELINGS AND MOTIVATIONS THROUGH NUMEROUS CASE EXAMPLES. TREATMENT THEORY, INSTITUTIONAL INNOVATION IN JUVENILE CORRECTIONS, CONJUGAL VISITATION, SHOCK PROBATION AND SHOCK PAROLE, PAROLE CONTRACTS, AND COMMUNITY CONTACT AND INMATE ATTITUDES ARE THE FOCUS OF THE THIRD SECTION. THE WORK CONCLUDES WITH READINGS CONSIDERING THE JUSTIFICATION OF IMPRISONMENT, INMATE ORGANIZATIONS, PRISONERS' RIGHTS, SWEDEN'S CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, AND THE PRISON OF THE FUTURE.
