Annotation

This annual report provides comprehensive information on the United States Adult Correctional System, specifically Federal and State adult correctional agencies and probation and parole agencies in both the United States and the Correctional Service of Canada for the year 2000.

Abstract

In providing accurate and current information on the United States adult correctional systems, the Criminal Justice Institute produces this annual report on Federal and State adult correctional agencies and probation and parole agencies with comprehensive data on populations, budgets, staff, facilities, probation, parole, and programs in 2000. Survey questionnaires were mailed to State and Federal correctional agencies in the United States and Correctional Service of Canada and to probation and parole agencies in the United States and Correctional Service of Canada. Completed questionnaires were submitted by correctional agencies from all 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and Canada. Probation and parole system questionnaires were submitted by 18 probation agencies, 18 parole agencies and 33 probation and parole agencies from the United States, the District of Columbia, the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts, and the Canadian National Parole Board. Report highlights include: (1) on January 1, 2001, State, Federal and the District of Columbia prisons reported 1,379,965 inmates; (2) 155,328 inmates, over 10 percent of the jurisdictions’ inmates were housed in facilities other than theirs; (3) on January 1, 2001, the average length of sentence was about 5.3 years with the average length of stay before release 2.5 years; (4) United States agencies reported 4,802 escapes during 2000; (5) the average agency spent less than 13 percent of its budget on capital costs; (6) 48 correctional agencies hired 37,426 correctional officers during 2000; and (7) parole agencies reported an average of 4,332 successful terminations in 2000.
