A survey of the State and Federal adult correctional agencies in the United States and the Correctional Service of Canada gathered data on the adult correctional systems, inmates, programs, personnel, and budgets in the two countries.
Abstract
Results showed that State and Federal prisons confined 732,236 inmates on January 1, 1991, an increase of 8.7 percent over the preceding year. Ninety-seven percent were sentenced; the others were either unsentenced or detainees. In addition, 41,577 inmates were confined in hospitals, community-based programs, and other situations; another 28,615 inmates were held in local jails, mainly, but not necessarily, due to crowding. Tables and figures show incarceration rates, population projections, age, gender, death row inmates, sentence lengths, inmate deaths, AIDS in correctional facilities, and inmate assaults. Other tables show the number of prisons and security levels, rated capacities and overcrowding, construction projects and costs, contract corrections services, family visiting, and inmate programs. Other tables show the numbers and types of correctional employees, turnover, salaries, employee drug testing, accreditation, and data on the Canadian correctional system.
