Based on data provided through a survey questionnaire mailed to jail systems in the United States that house over 200 inmates, this booklet presents narrative, tabular, and graphic data and information on jail administration and staff, budget, physical plants, inmates, and programs and services.
Abstract
Data were submitted by 81 jail systems that represent 164 jail facilities. A list of jails that responded to the survey is followed by a chart that shows the jail administrator's title for each jail system. Information on administration and staff encompasses number and positions of jail employees, jailers/officers/deputies hired in 1992, number of employees who resigned or retired during 1992, and hours of preservice and inservice training for jail staff. Other information on administration and staff addresses salaries, employee deaths in the line of duty in 1992, assaults on staff, drug testing of job applicants and employees, and the number of treatment staff employed. Budget information encompasses food and medical costs and the average cost per day per inmate. Among the data provided on physical plants are the number of jails and their capacities, institutions opened and beds added in 1992, number of beds under construction, beds planned and projected costs, and rated capacity and percentages over and under capacity. Data on inmate characteristics are followed by information on the following programs and services: objective classification, drug programs, counseling services, and education and vocational/job programs and services.
