Based on a survey questionnaire mailed to probation and parole agencies throughout North America, this booklet presents narrative, tabular, and graphic data and information on various aspects of probation and parole in the United States and Canada.
Abstract
Completed questionnaires were submitted by 68 probation and parole agencies from the United States, the District of Columbia, and the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, as well as the Correctional Service of Canada for parole. Information pertinent to the general administration of probation and parole agencies addresses separate and combined probation and parole agencies; government levels that administer probation and parole; the departments of corrections that administer probation and parole; and percentages of probationers, parolees, and prisoners. Separate sections on probation and parole provide data and information on agency administration, budgets, supervision, and services and programs. Data on agency administration address number of employees, hours of training, hours worked, and overtime and weekend work. Budget information focuses on operation costs for an agency, average costs per client per day, salaries, and allotted vehicles. Information on supervision includes number of face-to-face contacts between officers and clients, violation hearings, urine testing, and interstate compacts. Types of programs and services provided are also described.
