Chapters suggest factors in and techniques for helping adolescents cope with various problems through individual, family, and school counseling.
Abstract
Chapters on individual interventions focus on adolescent risk behaviors, suicide, pregnancy, violence, and loss. These issues are addressed from a developmental perspective, and suggestions for counseling strategies are designed to interrupt the cycle of self-defeating behavior. Chapters on family intervention address principles for growth implemented through family counseling and consultation; the developmental impact on children of changing family patterns; the use of family mediation to resolve family conflicts; counseling children of alcoholics; and counseling parents, stepparents, and their children in the context of remarriage. Chapters that address school interventions focus on the role of school counselors in educational reform, enhancing the educational attainment of minority youth, and building students' confidence and self-worth. Suggestions are also offered for encouraging personal growth in school groups and school counselors' use of power and influence to meet student needs. Chapter references.
