Intended for students and criminal justice personnel who counsel offenders as a result of employment in the criminal justice system, this volume is intended to provide an understanding of offenders and their problems, the counseling process, laws that criminal justice counselors must know, proven counseling approaches in corrections in the United States, and appropriate and effective counselor attitudes.
Abstract
The text recognizes that individuals who counsel offenders in the criminal justice system often have not had the extensive training of a licensed psychologist. The discussion emphasizes the importance of empathy, caring, and the ability to listen. Individual chapters focus on basic counseling concepts, important issues in counseling, the kinds of problems offenders tend to have, legal considerations counselors must keep in mind, the counseling modalities used in criminal justice, what counselors might expect during counseling sessions, and findings of research on counseling effectiveness. Chapter exercises, summaries, and reference lists; figures, glossary, index, list of cases cited, and 121 references (Publisher summary modified)
