DESPITE THE GOOD INTENTIONS OF THE PROBATION OFFICER, HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SPANISH-HERITAGE OFFENDERS MIGHT BE SERIOUSLY DAMAGED IF HE DOES NOT TAKE LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES AND CULTURAL DIFFERENCES INTO ACCOUNT.
Abstract
THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS FOR WORKING WITH THE SPANISH HERITAGE OFFENDER ARE PRESENTED: UNDERSTAND THE CULTURAL DETERMINANTS OF THE OFFENDER'S BEHAVIOR, BE SURE THE OFFENDER UNDERSTANDS YOU, BE WARM AND PERSONAL (BUT AVOID USE OF GIVEN NAMES), UNDERSTAND CULTURALLY DETERMINED DEPENDENCY, ASK QUESTIONS AND MAKE SUGGESTIONS, REMIND THE OFFENDER ABOUT APPOINTMENTS, AND OFFER SERVICES.
