This volume describes the many settings in which counseling is used with offenders, victims, and criminal justice professionals under stress and uses case material to explore the dilemmas and opportunities for counselors in criminal justice.
Abstract
The discussion is intended for use by volunteers and professionals in the probation, prisons, religious institutions, and the voluntary sector, as well as for counselors who are interacting with the courts, and police, and the prison and probations services for the first time. The text focuses primarily on the use of counselors in Great Britain; it also discusses issues related to counseling in criminal justice settings in Canada and the United States. An overview of the development of counseling in the criminal justice system is followed by chapters examining the context of counseling in criminal justice, the practice of counseling in criminal justice, specific issues such as role conflicts and training needs, professional relationships, and problems involved in counseling in criminal justice. The discussion reviews the political pressures that have both limited and encouraged the growth of counseling in criminal justice settings. Index and approximately 250 references
