SERIES OF ARTICLES ON THE USE OF CONSULTING PSYCHIATRISTS IN CLASSIFYING OFFENDERS AND PROVIDING THERAPY.
Abstract
THE ARTICLE ON FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY STRESSES UNIFORMITY OF LABELS FOR USE IN THE COURTS. THE SECOND ESSAY RECOMMENDS STRONG EFFORTS TO SELECT THOSE OFFENDERS CAPABLE OF RESPONDING TO THERAPY FOR ACHIEVING REAL REHABILITATION. IN THE DISCUSSION OF USE OF PSYCHIATRIC REPORTS FOR THE MASSACHUSETTS COURTS, THE CASE HISTORY OF ONE OFFENDER, HIS EVALUATION AND TREATMENT ARE TRACED THROUGH THE REPORTS PRODUCED BY THE COURT CLINIC. SAMPLE REPORTS ARE ALSO GIVEN FROM THE LONDON REMAND HOME FOR DELINQUENT GIRLS. ON THE BASIS OF A PERIOD OF INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION THESE RECOMMEND TREATMENT MOST LIKELY TO HELP THE GIRL. THE ESSAY ON PSYCHIATRIC REPORTS IN DENMARK STRESSES LEGAL SAFEGUARDS THROUGH A MEDICO-LEGAL COUNCIL. THE ARTICLE ON THE CALIFORNIA JURISDICTION DESCRIBES A SYSTEM IN WHICH A THIRD OF THE OFFENDERS SENT TO PRISON ARE REFERRED FOR PSYCHIATRIC REPORTS. THE LAST ESSAY URGES LIMITS ON THE SOCIAL CONTROL FUNCTIONS OF PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSIS.
