Abstract
The findings show that the number of commitments represented a 12-percent increase over commitments made the previous year. In a breakdown of general categories of offenses, 11 percent of offenders committed personal crimes, 2 percent sex offenses, 26 percent property offenses, 14 percent drug offenses, 19 percent operating under the influence, and 28 percent all other offenses. The median sentence length in 1989 was 3 months; 15 percent of offenders were incarcerated in lieu of a fine, while 1 percent served only weekend sentences. The typical offender incarcerated in a county facility was 27 years old, white, single, born in Massachusetts, and had attained a 12th grade educational level. 3 appendixes
