This article describes the development of courthouse day care centers for children whose parents are involved in legal proceedings.
Abstract
The day care centers are designed for parents who need to appear in court as part of a criminal trial, civil suit, or divorce or custody proceedings. There are more than 30 courthouse child care centers across the country; other districts offer informal options to occupy children, including special waiting rooms or vouchers that can be used at nearby private child care facilities. Several of the courthouse day care centers offer referrals for social services when appropriate, and a few provide social workers onsite. Many of these centers face serious financial difficulties, however; another problem is the issue of the children's security, particularly those caught in the middle of custody disputes.
