Designed for criminal justice students, faculty, and professionals, this collection of eight papers addresses the role of the criminal court, differences among various types of criminal courts, and the effects of court decisions on the administration of criminal justice.
Abstract
In considering the role of criminal courts, articles discuss the question of whether courts should focus on procedural or distributive justice and the use of plea bargaining. Chapters on expert witnesses call for a more limited role for the expert witness in criminal trials; in one article, two university professors reflect on their experiences as expert witnesses. The military court system is compared to civilian adult and juvenile structures, and Federal and State courts are compared. In dealing with the effect of court decisions on criminal justice administration, chapters examine the implication of an injunction that limits jail populations and mandates certain standards, and the degree to which contemporary prisoners' rights correspond to either civil death or citizenship doctrines. Figures, data tables, notes, and reference lists are included.
