THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE CPTED CONCEPT AND KEY PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN TO TEST THAT CONCEPT ARE DISCUSSED, ALONG WITH THE RESOURCE BASE DERIVED TO ATTACK THE URBAN PROBLEMS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE/WESTINGHOUSE 4 YEAR RESEARCH AND DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. A NUMBER OF THE CPTED PROJECTS ARE EXAMINED IN TERMS OF OBJECTIVES, CRITERIA, AND STRATEGIES IMPLEMENTED TOGETHER WITH A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE THEORETICAL BACKGROUND FOR THE CPTED STRATEGIES AND THE FRAMEWORK FOR IMPLEMENTING AND EVALUATING THE PROGRAM. THE UNDERLYING RATIONALE FOR ALL CPTED STRATEGIES ARE: ACCESS CONTROL, SURVEILLANCE, ACTIVITY SUPPORT, AND MOTIVATION REINFORCEMENT. A NUMBER OF CASE STUDIES, PROGRAM MANUALS, TECHNICAL GUIDELINES, SCHOOL SECURITY GUIDELINES WILL BE PUBLISHED PRESENTING FINDINGS OF THE DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS. THE APPLICABILITY OF CPTED CRIME PREVENTION PRINCIPLES TO URBAN AREAS TO REDUCE CRIME, COALESCE COMMUNITY EFFORT, DEVELOP MANAGEMENT CAPABILITY, AND ENCOURAGE BETTER POLICE AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS IS DISCUSSED. AN ACTION AND RESEARCH AGENDA FOR THE FUTURE IS INCLUDED, GIVING PARTICULAR EMPHASIS TO THE ROLE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN PROVIDING FOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND RESEARCH. (RCB)
