This book presents a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and treatment of crack cocaine dependence based on hands-on clinical experience.
Abstract
Background information is provided in the first part on the social, biological, and psychological factors involved in crack addiction and various barriers to treatment. The second section covers the theoretical basis for use of pharmacological, psychoanalytic, and behavioral approaches and provides case histories illustrating the biopsychosocial theory of addiction that integrates these three approaches. Crack-treatment models comprise the third section of the book including treatments that work and promising treatment modalities. The fourth part describes clinical techniques in the assessment phase covering elements of an effective clinical interview and presenting strategies to engage the ambivalent crack user in treatment. The last section examines clinical technique in the treatment phase covering topics of obstacles to treatment and ways to avoid them, the process of relapse in crack patients, the need for a multifaceted technique to address multideterminants of relapse, and a model of relapse prevention. 12 tables and 6 figures
