Because more women have entered law in the past 20 years, they now have a greater presence in the courts and in the legal profession.
Abstract
Women lawyers and judges have shaped and changed public policy affecting women, and they have taught their male colleagues that stereotypes about women rarely have validity. Courts are now more sensitive to the legal problems of women such as domestic violence, divorce and custody decisions, and property division. The large numbers of women in the legal profession have expressed a variety of views on issues affecting women; their diversity of opinions is a sign that they have overcome tokenism and stereotypes. Women lawyers have also challenged the work habits and priorities of their male counterparts, suggesting that neither men nor women should pursue them. Women in the courts will continue to challenge traditional thinking.
