This book suggests ways to create safe campuses.
Abstract
The issue of campus crime, violence and student misconduct reflects the mood and conditions of society at large. The first three chapters of this volume are designed to offer college and university officials a realistic view of today's campus environment. They also present issues and threats that affect the campus community and students: guns on campus; violence, assaults and harassment; hazing; rape and other sex offenses; alcohol and drugs; outside intruders; disorders and disruptions; and property crimes. The remaining seven chapters offer practical recommendations presented in terms of critical components for creating a safe campus. Those critical components are: (1) effective student affairs; (2) effective police and security services; (3) community policing; (4) secure campus housing; (5) physical/environmental security; (6) records, reporting and disclosure; and (7) a collaborative approach.
