This paper presents creative ideas on how correctional agencies can partner with victim assistance organizations to promote the 2016 National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW).
Abstract
The ideas are divided into six categories. Under the first category, suggestions pertain to correctional client's fundraising for victim services. Events are suggested in which persons who are incarcerated or supervised on probation or parole host events and activities that raise money for support of designated victim assistance programs in their communities. The second category addresses victim/survivor awareness and programming. Ideas focus on activities and programs to help raise awareness of the impact of crime on victims and their families, offenders' families, and communities. The third category, correctional staff education, contains ideas for educational forums on victimizations issues that are directly relevant to correctional staff in promoting greater awareness of and sensitivity to victims among the offenders they supervise. The fourth category, direct victim and community support, promotes the hosting of activities that provide correctional clients and staff with the opportunity to support crime victims and those who serve them through a restorative justice framework. The fifth category, educational programs, focuses on standardized educational programs for correctional clients that incorporate NCVRW resources and the annual theme. The sixth category, media relations and public awareness, suggests ideas for traditional and social media outreach and other public-awareness activities that promote the partnership between correctional agencies and victim assistance programs.
