Retailers, mail-order owners and executives, credit managers, bankers, and others will find numerous ways to prevent credit card and check fraud in this comprehensive manual.
Abstract
Problem areas covered include 800-telephone numbers, credit card authorization, fraudulent checks, and company credit cards. Stolen credit cards, the limited help available from law enforcement, and how VISA and MasterCard banks allegedly ignore retailers' problems are explored. Several chapters focus on the under-$50 sale, which is not checked by merchants for authorization; the involvement of organized crime in counterfeit cards and fraud; and how merchants can avoid double debits when merchandise is returned through the mail. The authors describe opportunities for illegal dissemination and use of credit card numbers by numerous potential thieves. Other chapters examine internal and postal theft, theft by prison inmates using the telephone and mail, postal claims, underpayment and overpayment schemes, nonpayment due to death or divorce, the need for an internal recording system of all transactions, and how American Express and Diners Club help the merchant. Summaries on solving specific problems mentioned in previous chapters are included.
