This report on crime in Alabama for calendar year 2008 focuses on the more serious crimes, technically called Part I offenses, reported to the State Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program by the State's law enforcement agencies; and it also presents an overview of the less serious offenses (Part II offenses) as well as statistics on arrests, recovered property, and law enforcement employees.
Abstract
There were 201,880 crimes reported by Alabama law enforcement agencies in 2008, a 4-percent increase over 2007. The crime rate for the State was 4,330.4 per 1000,000 inhabitants. As a daily average, there were 553 Part I offenses reported. The total value of property stolen in 2008 was $250,195,952; 15 percent was recovered. There were 265 law enforcement officers assaulted in 2008; 66 percent received serious injuries, and 34 percent received minimal or no injuries. Crime trends are shown for the years 2004-2008. Data for each year cover total crimes, clearance, and clearance rate. The monthly trend of offenses for 2008, address total crimes for each month and the number of violent and property offenses. There were 37,525 clearances in 2008, which amounted to a clearance rate of 19 percent. A total of 33,201 persons were arrested for Part I offenses. Part I arrests composed 14 percent of all arrests in Alabama in 2008. Fourteen percent of the Part I arrests involved juveniles; 67 percent of those arrested for Part I offenses were males; 51 percent of those arrested for Part I offenses were Black, and 49 percent were White. A total of 198,881 persons were arrested for Part II offenses; 5 percent of Part II arrests involved juveniles. Males composed 75 percent of Part II arrests; 56 percent of Part II arrests involved Whites, and 44 percent involved Blacks. Extensive tables and figures
