This booklet documents the seriousness of the crime problem in the United States, focuses on three areas (violent crime, organized crime, and white-collar crime) and reviews proposed solutions to control crime.
Abstract
A survey of statistics, newspaper articles, and research reports documents the crime epidemic. The booklet reviews the Federal Government's periodic crusades against crime, addressing Attorney General William French Smith's goals for the U.S. Justice Department, the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, and the Federal Criminal Code. The discussion of violent crime considers the debate over the exclusionary rule and handgun controls. The infiltration of organized crime into the economy and political processes and its increasingly sophisticated methods are examined. White-collar crime is addressed, with attention focused on corruption of government officials, corporations' illegal activities, computer crime, employee theft, and shoplifting. Also discussed are actions taken by citizens to protect themselves with locks, guns, changes in lifestyles, and community crime-prevention organizations.
