This report presents statistics on crime in the 76 cities that various magazine surveys have cited as being the best places for business, living, or both.
Abstract
The statistics cover the period 1979-98 in all major crime categories. The crimes include all the Crime Index offenses, including the violent crimes, of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault; the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft; and total crime. Each table compares numbers of crimes and crime rates for the city, suburbs, metropolitan area, and the United States. Graphs displaying crime trends focus on violent, property, and total crimes. The profile also contains statistics on hate crimes, illegal drugs, correctional facilities, HIV and AIDS in correctional facilities, capital punishment, law enforcement personnel, laws related to handguns, alcohol, and hate crimes, anti-crime programs, and the chances of becoming a victim. Tables also cover arrestees testing positive for cocaine, marijuana, opiates, and methamphetamine; firearms used by law enforcement; sex offender registration laws; and laws regarding public notification of the release of sex offenders. Tables; figures; and appended lists of metropolitan statistical areas, police agencies, and offense definitions
