BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN MICHIGAN, THE GENERAL PROCESS BY WHICH IT WORKS, AND THE OUTCOMES.
Abstract
THE ARREST-CONVICTION-PUNISHMENT PROCESS IS BROKEN DOWN INTO SEVEN MAJOR STEPS TO ILLUSTRATE STATISTICALLY THE FLOW OF 1000 SERIOUS (INDEX) CRIMES THROUGH THE STATE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. OUT OF 1000 INDEX CRIMES REPORTED TO THE POLICE IN 1974, 42 ADULTS WERE FOUND GUILTY, OF WHICH AT LEAST ELEVEN WERE SENTENCED TO PROBATION. AT THE SAME TIME, REPORTED INDEX OFFENSES INCREASED 21 PERCENT BETWEEN 1971-75. THIS DATA SUGGESTS THAT PERSONS WHO COMMIT SERIOUS CRIMES IN MICHIGAN ARE NOT VERY LIKELY TO BE APPREHENDED, CONVICTED, OR PUNISHED. FOR A RELATED DOCUMENT, SEE NCJ-37282.
