SPECIFIC TYPES OF OFFENDERS ARE TRACED THROUGH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM OF VENTURA COUNTY AND THE RELATIVE IMPACTS OF SPECIFIC CRIME TYPES ARE DETERMINED.
Abstract
THIS CRIME-SPECIFIC ANALYSIS WAS UNDERTAKEN TO FIND QUANTITATIVE MEASURES WHICH WOULD AFFORD A SYSTEMATIC BASIS FOR DETERMINING WHERE VENTURA COUNTY'S LIMITED CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESOURCES CAN BE APPLIED MOST EFFECTIVELY. SPECIFIC CRIME DATA - TIME, PLACE, AND CIRCUMSTANCES - ARE USEFUL IN PROMOTING PROTECTIVE MEASURES BY POTENTIAL VICTIMS AND CAN BE USED IN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AIMED AT POTENTIAL VICTIMS OF SPECIFIC CRIMES. THE KNOWLEDGE COLLECTED ON OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS IS EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF LONG-TERM STRATEGIES FOR DEALING WITH PARTICULAR CLASSES OF OFFENDERS, E.G., DRUG OFFENDERS AND PROPERTY CRIMINALS. IT IS ALSO HOPED THAT, IN THE CORRECTIONS AREA, STATISTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF CONVICTED OFFENDERS AND DATA ON THE RELATIVE FREQUENCY OF VARIOUS CRIME TYPES CAN BE USED TO PREDICT FACILITY, PROGRAM, AND MANPOWER REQUIREMENTS IN THE FUTURE.
