Abstract
THE TEST IS BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT STUDENTS AND FACULTY MEMBERS CAN INTEGRATE LAW AND SOCIAL SCIENCES IN THE STUDY OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AND IN EVALUATING THE REACTION OF SOCIETY TO CRIMINAL OFFENSES. THE STUDY OF CRIME ENCOMPASSES CRIME, CRIMINALS, AND CRIMINOLOGY; THE CONCEPT AND THE PURPOSE OF LAW; THE MEASUREMENT OF CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES (UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS SYSTEM, DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS ARRESTED FOR CRIMES, AND VICTIMS OF CRIME); AND RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES IN CRIMINOLOGY (TYPES OF RESEARCH DESIGNS, SINGLE-FACTOR VERSUS MULTIPLE-FACTOR RESEARCH APPROACHES, AND COMMON ERRORS IN CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH). EXPLANATIONS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR PERTAIN TO INDIVIDUALISTIC THEORIES (CLASSICAL, NEOCLASSICAL, SCIENTIFIC CRIMINOLOGY, CARTOGRAPHIC, POSITIVE, CONSTITUTIONAL, PSYCHIATRIC AND PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND PERSONALITY DEVIATION AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR THEORIES), SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES (ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, ANOMIE, SUBCULTURE, DELINQUENCY, CONFLICT, RACIAL TENSIONS, AND THE HOME ENVIRONMENT), SELF-CONCEPT AND CONTAINMENT THEORY, LABELING, AND TYPES OF CRIMINAL OFFENDERS (CAREER CRIMINALS, COMMONPLACE CRIME, PUBLIC ORDER CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, VIOLENT PERSONAL CRIME, TERRORISM, POLITICAL CRIME, AND UPPER-WORLD CRIME OR WHITE COLLAR CRIME). THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM PRIMARILY INVOLVES THE POLICE, DETENTION AND SHORT-TERM TREATMENT, LAWYERS AND JUDGES, AND THE COURT SYSTEM. THE FIELD OF CORRECTIONS COVERS PUNISHMENT, IMPRISONMENT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CORPORAL PUNISHMENT, PROGRESS TOWARD TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION IN THE PRISON COMMUNITY, AND RELEASE FROM PRISON. EACH CHAPTER IN THE BOOK IS SUMMARIZED, AND RECOMMENDED READINGS ARE LISTED. ILLUSTRATIONS, TABULAR DATA, AND INDEXES ARE INCLUDED. (DEP)
