IN MAY, 1978, A GROUP OF POETS, NOVELISTS, AND OTHER WRITERS CONVENED AT BISKOPS-ARNO ALONG WITH SOCIAL RESEARCHERS AND POLITICIANS TO DISCUSS CRIME AND DEFECTS IN HUMAN INTERRELATIONS.
Abstract
THAT CRIME CAN BE THE RESULT OF AN INCREASINGLY APPARENT LACK OF HUMAN COMMUNICATIONS AND DEFECTIVE INTERRELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE MANIFESTED IN ISOLATION AND A TENDENCY FOR PEOPLE TO LIMIT THEIR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND FEEL ALIENATED WAS THE THEME OF THE CONFERENCE ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM FINLAND, SWEDEN, AMERICA, NORWAY, AND DENMARK. PRESENTATIONS AND DISCUSSION TOUCHED ON UPCOMING PROJECTS, PROPOSED WRITINGS AND THREE NOVELS DEALING WITH THE SUBJECTS OF HUMAN ISOLATION, THE CULTURAL PROBLEMS ACCOMPANYING RURAL FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE FORCED INTO URBAN AREAS TO SEEK EMPLOYMENT, THE INABILITY OF FAMILY MEMBERS TO COMMUNICATE IDEAS OR FEELINGS TO ONE ANOTHER, THE FAILURE OF INDUSTRIALIZED SOCIETY TO PROVIDE MEANINGFUL WORK TO ITS MEMBERS, AND MORE. PARTICIPANTS AGREED OVERALL THAT, ALTHOUGH MODERN SOCIETY IS POSITIVE, A PERVADING NEED FOR ATTACHMENT AND CONTINUITY, LOVING RELATIONSHIPS, AND NEARNESS TO NATURE EXISTS. IN THIS KIND OF SOCIETY, FAMILIES HAVE DIFFICULTY IN PASSING ALONG AND INSTILLING RESPECT FOR SOCIAL NORMS IN CHILDREN AS WELL AS IN TEACHING GENUINE FEELINGS OF CONCERN FOR THE REST OF HUMANITY PARTICULARLY ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS. THIS TYPE OF SITUATION BREEDS CRIME AND FEELINGS OF NONRESPONSIBILITY FOR CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. WHITE COLLAR CRIME AND JUVENILE DELINQUENCY THRIVE ESPECIALLY WELL IN THIS ENVIRONMENT. --IN SWEDISH. (DAG)
